ISC-Cairo and ISC-6 October Give Back through Adopt-A-School Project
In October of 2013, the International School of Choueifat-Cairo (ISC-Cairo) and the International School of Choueifat-City of 6 October (ISC-6 October) simultaneously rolled out the “Adopt-A-School” Project as part of their community social responsibility plan for the current academic year. Since then, students from both schools have been actively engaged in combining their efforts to raise funds to help improve the conditions of local government schools.
So far, ISC-Cairo has raised enough funds to fully furnish 8 classrooms at the newly-built government school, Khadega Experimental School. The furniture they helped purchase includes 150 desks and chairs for students, teachers’ desks and chairs, chalkboards in all classrooms, and notice boards. For its part, ISC-6 October funds have helped supply 4 classrooms at the Om EL-Mumeneen School with 100 student desks and chairs, teachers’ desks and chairs, chalkboards, chalk, and board erasers. The team from ISC-6 October also visited the school to help repaint, fix, and install new windows in the classrooms and hallways. Efforts will continue throughout the year to complete work on a corridor with 7 classrooms.
“The Adopt-a-School Project was born after our students sat for official exams at government schools in Cairo,” explained Ms. Nora Abdelaziz, Student Life Coordinator at ISC-6 October. “They were deeply moved by differences between the government schools and their own schools and decided that they wanted to do something about it. In order to raise funds, the students organized a number of bake sales,” she added. “We hope to make this a continuous effort and are in the process of further fundraising to help make more changes at these local government schools.”
In order to maximize the impact of their efforts and resources, ISC-Cairo and ISC-6 October regularly work together, showcasing a spirit of cooperation and setting an example to neighboring private schools. Over the years, ISC-Cairo and ISC-6 October have jointly raised money for various causes including raising funds for 3 lifesaving heart surgeries at the Dr. Magdy Yacoub Medical Center, providing free medical checkups to 600 children, and making donations to the Children’s Cancer Hospital and a local orphanage. Students at these two SABIS® member schools have also successfully raised money that helped fund 2 summer camps for homeless children and organized several food drives that resulted in considerable donations to the Egyptian Food Bank.
Across the globe, the SABIS Student Life Organization® in each SABIS® member school organizes community service activities and outreach programs that give back to their communities. The objective of these efforts is to teach students that they can, and will, change the world.
